What’s New with WordPress 6.5
WordPress 6.5 “Regina” was released to the world on April 2nd, 2024. With 65 accessibility improvements, over 110 performance updates and tons of new features, updates and enhancements, this major release lays a whole new foundation for website creation in WordPress. Let’s check out some of the highlights.
Smoother UI
Frictionless dragging is here! You’ll be able to feel the difference with the new smoother drag and drop update.
New Data Views
With this new update you have the ability to quickly organize how you would like data and information to display. This applies to pages, templates, patterns, and template parts.
New Font Library
This new update allows you to add and manage fonts across your site directly from the site editor. You can now install, remove, and activate local and Google Fonts across your site.
Rename Blocks
You now have a renaming option for your blocks! Previously you were able to rename groups, but now you can rename individual blocks. This makes organizing and understanding your content a breeze.
Interactivity API
WordPress 6.5 also introduced the Interactivity API. This feature is geared towards developers, creating a standard method for adding interactive front-end experiences for blocks. From pop-ups to checkouts to instant page navigation, this feature allows your users to interact with content in real time, all while maintaining optimal performance.
Enhanced Background and Shadow Tools
You now have control over the size, repeat, and focal point options for background images in Group blocks. You also have the option of adding a box shadow to more block types. This allows you to create depth in your layouts. This update also allows you to set the aspect ratio for cover block images and give them a color overlay.
Performance and Accessibility Updates
This update includes over 110 performance updates bringing a noticeable sense of speed. All translated sites will see an increase of up to 25% load time, which is no small feat. On top of that, WordPress is more accessible than ever. WordPress 6.5 comes with more than 65 accessibility improvements, including a key fix that unblocks access to the admin submenus for screen reader users and others who navigate by keyboard.

These are just the highlights! WordPress 6.5 is packed with features that will enhance your site and help you bring things to a new level. The future is bright with WordPress!
